A Special Memory Bear.

As promised, I'm sharing with you the bear I made as special Christmas gift to my hubby. He appreciates these things made by me!
My FIL passed away at the age of 54... I decided to make a special bear for my DH to keep forever, with some things belonged to his father. As he loves Sherlock Holmes, let me introduce Sherlock...

His leather pads are made from my FIL's tired overnight bag, and so are all the loops in his coat. I made the tag for Sherlock adding the words 'Elementary my dear Watson' (which, by the way, was never said by Holmes in Conan Doyle's books, but it's a later addition in Sherlock Holmes' films).

To stain the tag, I dipped it in coffee and then put on a baking pan,  spread with cinnamon and 'cooked' in oven for about 5 minutes (be very careful while paper is in the hot oven). I like the result very much, and it smells good too. Thanks to lovely Sandy @Quill Cottage for sharing the recipe! She is quite a talented and productive crafter, and shares a lot of fun projects, so please visit her blog when you can.

My FIL's pipe and buttons from old clothes were used too. I managed to sew a detective outfit without having a pattern, I'm not sure I can do this again!

  1. This is just about the cutest bear I have ever seen and he is stitched and adorned with sheer love.Bravo.

  2. WITHOUT A PATTERN?! You are quite an amazing woman, Monica! And what a truly thoughtful gift for your husband! I am sure he will treasure it forever.

  3. Now that is the sweetest gift for your husband. I'm sure he will treasure it. I love the way you used your FIL's overnight bag and overcoat to help create Sherlock.

  4. Adorable!!! What a wonderful keepsake! Your hubby must be so thrilled, such a lovely memory of his father!

Also love the tags and what a nice touch with the cinnamon. Mmmm

Best wishes for a wonderful 2010.
    Thanks for your friendship.

  17. It's remarkable, and so thoughtful to use your fil's items as materials! what a keepsake

  18. Monica,

This is one of the most precious and special gifts of love I have ever seen! I hope you document this bears history and keep his papers in a tiny Sherlock suitcase, perhaps an old coin purse, with him so that your family will know his history. I love the combination of the handmade bear and snippets of your FIL's possessions.

Thank you for the sweet mention. I hope your day is a bright one!

  19. Hi Monica,
I just found your blog. Sherlock is just an amazing bear. The love the you put into this for your husband brings tears to my eyes. You found such a perfect way to give him something of his father's as a forever keepsake. Years ago I was in love with Paddington Bear, but my children were more into Seseme Steet characters, cookie monster, no less, lol. Sherlock just takes my breath away, everything about him is outstanding. I guess you think I like him, huh? Sorry, I loved him at first glance and then when I realized you had made him, without a pattern, oh my. Do you sell you bears? They are all so adorable. I love Joy in her white dres and straw hat. Such talent! So glad I happened on your blog. Have a beautiful day.

  20. I am sure your hubby must have teared up when he received this precious gift. I did just reading about it! What an abosolutely lovely gift. You are a sweetie :)

  21. Monica, your bear is beautiful....oh, so gorgeous. I love Sherlock Holmes. Wow, you are talented!
